This Death Investigation course is one of a kind, and is being held once this year. Early registration is encouraged.

Death scenes often present the investigator with many dynamic challenges. It is important to understand the evidence and patterns of evidence at the crime scene in order to effectively investigate a death or homicide. The entire range of forensic evidence encountered in a death scene will be covered. Proper crime scene response and investigation is key to solving death cases. The investigator will learn the proper crime scene management concepts and subsequent crime scene investigation methods. The body as a scene and death scene reconstruction will be taught. The autopsy will be covered in depth.

This course develops the skills needed in death investigation by expanding the attendees base knowledge in death scene protocol, legal considerations, laboratory, services, the role of the medical examiner, wound identification/interpretation, investigation procedures, forensic anthropology, and evidence processing. You will learn how to conduct a death investigation resulting from criminal, suspicious, known or undetermined causes.

This course will also cover deaths of children, and how they are sometimes misclassified. Other topics that will be covered are:

  • New procedures and new technology used in death investigations
  • Determination of manner, cause, and time of death
  • Sexual related, drug related, asphyxia related, and strangulation deaths
  • Gunshots, motor vehicle, and fire and explosion caused deaths
  • Anthropology and human remains

This course is for sworn law enforcement, laboratory personnel, medical examiner personnel, child protective services, attorneys, and related fields. Graduate students are encouraged to enroll, especially those in the Forensic Science discipline. Graduate students may be eligible for a scholarship, please call the Institute for details, (203)932-7460. POSTC credits are available for law enforcement.

The instructors for this course will be:

  • Dr. Henry C. Lee, renowned Forensic Scientist and Founder of the Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Science.
  • Staff from Connecticut’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. There will be a special focus on the death of children.
  • Yale Department of Anthropology.
