A series of small laboratories have been established, providing research training for scientists and students in forensic science. Research is ongoing in DNA analysis and biological evidence, crime scene analysis and human identification, teleforensics and cyber crime detection.
The Institute works with companies to foster incubator activities for small business development, testing or developing specialized equipment or adapting existing equipment for forensic, law enforcement and fire science needs.

The Institute is a partner in a cooperative agreement with the National Institute of Justice to develop low cost teleforensic capacity for law enforcement agencies. The goal of the research is to use commercially available products to transmit real-time, high quality images, and data from a crime scene to a laboratory where experienced forensic investigators can review data and then direct crime operations. Future applications include real-time transmission and analysis of data images for fingerprints, cartridge casings, drugs, and biometrics.
